How to Make Flashcards That Actually Help
Useful flashcards ask one clear question or cue and have one compact answer. Overloaded cards are difficult to retrieve and review.
Method
- Keep one idea per card.
- Prefer precise prompts over vague headings.
- Keep the answer short enough to check quickly.
- Remove cards that duplicate the same fact.
Worked example
Front: What enzyme unwinds DNA? Back: Helicase.
A paragraph describing all of replication should become several cards instead.
Notes
- Verify AI-generated definitions.
- Use examples for concepts that require application.
- Review difficult cards more often.
